ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT FACIAL EXFOLIATION

What is exfoliation?

Exfoliation is the process of loosening and removing dead keratinised skin cells from the top layer of the skin (Epidermis) with a particular topical skincare product designed to do this.

Why is exfoliating your skin important?

While our skin natural exfoliates itself by shedding dead skin cells, more than ever, we need to give this biological process a big helping hand! But why is this? Well, here are some good reasons:

  1. As we hit our early thirty’s, the body’s natural skin shedding process significantly slows down. Younger skin has a natural cellular turnover process of about 26 days however as we hit our thirty’s and over, this turnover becomes more sluggish at about 45 days. Dead skin cells build up causing dullness and dryness which causes premature ageing. Exfoliation helps the skin cell turnover process that is essential for more youthful looking skin.
  2. Revolving seasons. Each season brings its own challenges for our skin and every three months our complexion needs something different including the process of exfoliation.
  3. Instant results. The best way to immediately smooth, soften, and give our skin a healthy glow is to polish the skin with an exfoliator.
  4. We live in a vastly different environment from 100 years ago.  Climate change is intensifying the weather conditions and humidity levels that we live in including harsher Ultraviolet Radiation (UV). Artificial air conditioning to heat and cool our spaces has become the norm to adjust to our comforts. Lighting, pollution emissions, chemicals, water quality, diet and stress are all on the rise and are also hugely responsible for the extra assaults our skin faces daily leading to damaged, dull, and dry skin.

What skin concerns does exfoliation help?

All skin types benefit from exfoliation. In terms of skin conditions, pigmentation, lines and wrinkles, dehydration, skin dullness, uneven skin texture and breakouts are all common skin concerns we face from time to time and exfoliation is a key component to effectively targeting these skin conditions.

What are the benefits of exfoliation?

There are so many! Here are some of the reasons why exfoliation should be a part of your weekly skincare regime:Instant revival and radiance of your skin

  • Encouragement of skin cell renewal
  • Refinement of the appearance of pores
  • Stimulation of collagen production
  • Increase in blood circulation
  • Increase in skincare absorption and penetration
  • Smoother appearance of rough textured or flaky skin
  • Reduction of breakouts and congestion
  • Prevention of ingrown hairs
  • Reduction in the appearance of dry dehydrated horizonal facial lines
  • A smooth and flawless application of makeup products

What types of exfoliators are there?

Generally, topical exfoliators fall into one of two types:

  1. Chemical Exfoliation - Uses Enzymes or Acids such as Alpha Hydroxy Acids (for example glycolic and lactic acid) and Beta Hydroxy Acid (for example salicylic acid). This Enzymes and Acids break the bonds between cells, removing layers of skin via a chemical reaction.
  2. Physical Exfoliation - Removes skin cells by manually buffing and collecting dead skin cells with a sponge, brush, scrub granules or spherical particles.

Origani Manuka Honey uses a combination of both forms of exfoliation and the benefits of such a formula will be explained next!

How and when to effectively exfoliate?

Did you know that the best time of the day to exfoliate is on the morning? This is because the skin is busy at night restoring and renewing itself hence a build-up of dead skin when you wake up. Dermatologists advise to exfoliate between one to two times a week. However, it really depends on how your skin manages it. For sensitive skin, once a week is the advice.
